Monotubs VS All-in-One Grow Bags: What Should You Choose?

Looking for an all-in-one grow kit to begin or continue your journey with growing Gourmet Health Mushrooms? Look no further than Only Spores!

It can be confusing with the variations of kits we offer, so we’ve compiled a list of pros and cons to support you in deciding which one would work best for you!

Don’t get me wrong, both of our kits are all in one, easy to use and come with a guide you can access here. However, they both have their differences which you should understand before you make your decision.

Monotubs

Monotubs are one of the oldest kits in the hobby when it comes to growing Gourmet Health Mushrooms, and for good reason! They provide larger yields than other kits and more space for larger fruiting capabilities, which is perfect for strains that produce naturally large fruits (i.e., King Oyster Mushrooms).

Monotubs are amazing kits, but they are more hands on and require more support throughout the process than our all-in-one grow bags.

There are stages of the lifecycle of a monotub which requires hands-on support, which increases the chance of your kit coming into contact with contaminants if not handled correctly.

The inoculation and colonisation remain just as easy, however once this stage is completed the brick must be broken up and mixed with CVG and moved into a tub to fruit.

Due to their larger surface area, they are more prone to contamination, however experienced mycologists are able to identify these areas and remove contamination before it effects your project. For support on how to avoid contamination, you can read our blog here.

Monotubs during fruiting require misting and fanning once or twice daily and, depending on your environmental conditions, this may change throughout the process. Beginners, or less confident mycologists, will struggle to know when to decrease or increase misting and/or fanning which can lead to abnormal growth or contamination in your project.

This isn’t to say that you can’t progress to a Monotub set-up, but we would strongly advise you start smaller with our all-in-one grow bags to avoid a contaminated or an inactive project being your first introduction to the world of mycology.

Watching the bag colonise and fruit and seeing what this should look like, will support you immensely when you’re ready to take on larger projects!

There are manytypes of Monotubs on the market, but they remain a consistent and reliable kit for those with a bit more experience. They can be a little more expensive, but they make up for it with their much larger yields!

All-in-One Mushroom Grow Bags

There are multiple types of all-in-one bags available online which can complicate things as they do differ depending on the supplier you choose to go with. This blog is specific to our all-in-one grow bags, so if you have gone with another supplier, you should contact them with any queries on the suitability of the kit.

Our mushroom grow bags are easy and quicker than traditional kits. They keep the project contained in a bag to prevent contamination, require minimal intervention up until fruiting and are quicker to colonise than other kits (including Monotubs).

At the fruiting stage, simply open the bag, place in the provided fruiting bag, and then move into indirect light to trigger fruiting.

Depending on the type of Gourmet Health Mushroom strain you have, you may need to occasionally mist the walls of the bag.

These kits are ideal for beginners, or those wanting a quicker yield. If you want to try multiple Gourmet Health Mushroom strains at once, these small and speedy kits would be perfect! They are more affordable than larger kits, like the Monotubs.

So… What Should I Choose?

Both kits come with all you need to start your Gourmet Health Mushroom Project (minus the Gourmet Health Mushroom spores) and have helpful guides you can find here.

Overall, we would recommend the Monotub for more advanced mycologists, and the all-in-one grow bags for beginners and everyone in-between!
